The Imago Dei, or “Why should secularists care about human life?”

June 23, 2014 /106 Comments/in Philosophy, Religion /by Monica Snyder

[Esta publicación está disponible en español aquí.] I’ve had a few Christian pro-life friends of mine (kindly) tell me they don’t really understand how a secularist can defend the pro-life position. Sure, they get that we don’t need religion to understand fetal development, and we don’t need to believe in a god to recognize that […]

Introducing the Equal Rights Institute

June 17, 2014 /4 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

When you think of “the pro-life movement,” who do you picture? Do you think of a massive crowd with homemade picket signs shuffling through Washington DC in the snow (or San Francisco in the sun)? Do you imagine an elderly lady standing outside an abortion clinic handing out pregnancy resource pamphlets? Maybe the phrase “pro-life […]

The JFA Seminar: “Sometimes religion happens.”

May 1, 2014 /8 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

In yesterday’s post I wrote about the Justice For All (JFA) training seminar. I enjoyed the seminar because I appreciate JFA’s relational approach and substantial arguments. In today’s post I’ll explain one more reason I enjoyed the seminar: the people running the seminar made a clear effort to be religiously inclusive. That means a lot […]

The JFA training seminar was great.

April 30, 2014 /6 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

Last Saturday, fellow SPL rep Ellen and I attended a Justice For All (JFA) training seminar; the seminar was sponsored by the Right To Life of Central California and lead by pro-life advocate Josh Brahm.  (If you aren’t familiar with Josh’s work I suggest you check him out. He has a very thoughtful, relational approach […]

What would ever change your mind?

April 18, 2014 /109 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

[Today’s post is by guest blogger Kara B.] No too long ago, renowned Planet of the Apes cosplayer and animatronics enthusiast Ken Ham catalyzed the most massive synchronized facepalm when he answered a simple question asked by an audience member: “What, if anything, would ever change your mind?”  His answer, of course, was along the […]

I’m not distraught when people kill embryos.

April 7, 2014 /12 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

I reevaluate whether I am really pro-life on a regular basis. I believe abortion is almost always morally wrong. I believe it should usually be illegal. But I typically don’t feel very emotional about it, at least not regarding early-term abortions (the most common abortions). When I think of early-term abortions I don’t feel anything […]

Everyone Welcome!

March 20, 2014 /6 Comments/in Religion /by Monica Snyder

A while ago, I wrote a post on encouraging more secular participation in the pro-life movement and asked readers to give their ideas on how we might increase religious diversity. Thanks to everyone who gave feedback. Here are a few suggestions. Feel encouraged to add more in the comments section, or email us (info@secularprolife.org)!   10 […]

Debating abortion with other secularists

March 17, 2014 /351 Comments/in Biology /by Monica Snyder

Last week Pro-Life Humanists’ Kristine Kruszelnicki wrote a blog post featured on Hemant Mehta’s Friendly Atheist blog (“Yes, There Are Pro-Life Atheists Out There. Here’s Why I’m One of Them.”) I was pleased and impressed to see that Hemant posted the piece. In my experience working with Secular Pro-Life, pro-choice secularists tend to be very […]

“Talking about my abortion.”

March 6, 2014 /13 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

In this link is the abortion story of a woman named Molly. You should know before you read it that there are some graphic descriptions and there’s some language. But you should read it. It’s very interesting. I thought the most interesting quote was here: What about for the in-between? The post-abortive women who need […]

“What if she’s lying?”

February 27, 2014 /28 Comments/in Rape Exception /by Monica Snyder

Preface: Many pro-life activists argue that abortion should be illegal even in the case of rape. While SPL does not take a position on the rape exception, we do agree that the rape exception should be discussed with particular sensitivity. Whenever you are discussing topics related to sexual assault, whether in the context of abortion or […]
