6 reasons equal protection laws can’t be enforced justly

April 29, 2026 in Legislation, laws, & court cases, Miscarriage & Pregnancy Loss, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

First, a few definitions When I use the term “pregnancy loss” it can refer to either miscarriage or abortion. The difficulty in distinguishing the two is a major theme of this article. When I talk about “equal protection laws,” I’m referring to laws that would make it possible to charge women who get abortions with […]

25 assumptions about abortion for fetal anomaly

April 15, 2026 in Ableism, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

We talk about abortion for fetal anomaly often without noticing a lot of unspoken and unexamined assumptions. In this post, I’m not trying to evaluate whether the assumptions are true, false, fair, or absurd. I’m only naming them. If you’re looking for evaluations about the assumptions, skip to the section “Evaluative Content.” Assumptions about moral […]

Recap: AAPLOG conference 2026

April 1, 2026 in Administrative, Speeches, Discussions, Presentations, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

At the end of February, I keynoted the conference for the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG) in Seattle. I trained nearly 300 medical professionals on how to have more effective, persuasive conversations about abortion. This work is core to Secular Pro-Life’s mission: advancing secular arguments against abortion but also training people with […]

I got published in a philosophy journal.

March 20, 2026 in Ableism, Philosophy, Research, SPL Emails, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

In 2024, JAMA Pediatrics published “Infant Deaths After Texas’ 2021 Ban on Abortion in Early Pregnancy,” which argued that “abortion restrictions may have negative spillover effects on infant health.” The paper was filled with questionable and frankly ableist assumptions, and I wanted to respond somewhere beyond SPL’s blog. I spoke with Nicholas Colgrove about it. […]

AAP updates guidelines for prenatal care of babies with Trisomy 13 or 18

March 18, 2026 in Ableism, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

March is Trisomy Awareness Month, and March 18 is Trisomy 18 Awareness Day. Happy to write to you today with some good news. Historically, when parents received a prenatal diagnosis of Trisomy 13 or 18, medical teams would tell them the conditions are fatal. If parents still wanted to try to give their children the […]

Why pregnancy centers should offer miscarriage kits: an interview with Chaney Gooley and Rachel Owen

March 9, 2026 in Miscarriage & Pregnancy Loss, Reproductive Grief Resources, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

I spoke with Chaney Gooley, a nonprofit consultant for Heaven’s Gain, and Rachel Owen, the CEO of Infinite Worth, about miscarriage kits, which are tools for helping loss parents identify and preserve embryonic or fetal remains in the course of at-home miscarriages. The three of us talked about the major gaps in society’s approach to […]
