Kristi Burkhart is Director of Pregnancy Care Center, a locally organized and funded organization that has been helping women and their babies in Fresno, California since 1984. Here she talks to us about how she got involved with a pregnancy center, what kind of help the center offers, how the center navigates working with people […]

“Nine months of inconvenience.”

February 3, 2015 /0 Comments/in Biology, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

In the abortion debate, sometimes people describe pregnancy as “nine months of inconvenience” or a “temporary donation of the uterus” or other similar terms. Usually they use these descriptions  because they are trying to show that, relative to abortion, unwanted pregnancy is not a very severe situation to endure.   I do agree that abortion […]

West Coast recap: “Just your existence makes a difference.”

January 28, 2015 /0 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

Last Saturday fellow SPL supporters and I marched in the West Coast Walk for Life through downtown San Francisco. To be blunt, I was not sure I was looking forward to it. I’ve done many SF Walks over the years, but this is the first year I was going to attempt one while 8 months […]

Your answers to the difference between “pro-choice” and “pro-abortion.”

October 21, 2014 /104 Comments/in Uncategorized, We Asked You Answered /by Monica Snyder

In order to change people’s minds, we need to understand what people think in the first place. Many pro-lifers who insist there’s no significant difference between the terms “pro-choice” and “pro-abortion,” but clearly the other side disagrees. You’ve probably heard people who support legal abortion get angry or frustrated if others try to label them […]

Abortion as a social good?

October 17, 2014 /500 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

On October 13, Slate published a piece by Hannah Rosin called “Abortion is Great,” in which Rosin discusses the views of pro-choice author Katha Pollitt and explains why more pro-choicers should embrace abortion as a social good. My blog post here is my initial reactions as I read Rosin’s piece. Rosin points out that 6 […]

How does the pro-life movement look to LGBT pro-lifers?

September 15, 2014 /414 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

Secular Pro-Life strongly encourages pro-lifers from different backgrounds to seek to understand one another and form coalitions in the fight against abortion. SPL’s main focus, obviously, is on different religious backgrounds. We ask our allies in the pro-life movement to help SPL create space for pro-life secularists and give secularists a stronger voice in the […]

The transcript also includes sources and graphics not available during the original speech. I’m Monica Snyder, I’m from the group Secular Pro-Life, and I’m an agnostic. My group […]

Contraception, abortion, and the importance of control groups.

August 25, 2014 /38 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

Some pro-lifers point out that many women seeking abortion were using (or misusing) some type of contraception when they conceived. Sometimes pro-lifers cite this fact as evidence that contraception does not decrease, and may even increase, abortion. But this conclusion is misguided. It seems likely that women who don’t want to be pregnant are more […]

How I see the abortion debate now that I’m pregnant.

August 22, 2014 /50 Comments/in Uncategorized, Your Stories /by Monica Snyder

So I’m pregnant. I’ve been relatively active in the pro-life movement for about 8 years now, and I’ve never been pregnant before. I’ve tried to listen attentively to the experiences of mothers in general and pregnant women particularly and understand where they’re coming from. And of course I still think attentive listening is a good […]

Misconceptions about the rape exception.

July 29, 2014 /486 Comments/in Bodily Rights, Rape Exception /by Monica Snyder

A few notes: (1) SPL doesn’t take a stance on the rape exception and invites bloggers to discuss both sides of the issue. (2) Because I’m talking about rape and pregnancy, I use female pronouns to refer to rape survivors. However, please remember that not all rape survivors are women. (3) I reference Thomson’s Violinist […]
