Recap: Let There Be Life Conference 2018 at UC Berkeley

September 12, 2018 /0 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

The Let There Be Life Conference co-hosted by Berkeley Students for Life and Pro-Life San Francisco was a smashing success. Not only did each speaker cover very different content, but the style of each speech was entirely different. There were speeches in the style of spoken word poetry, rigorous academic discussion, sermon*, humorous dialogue, rousing call to […]

Pro-choice states have just as many unintended pregnancies, and far more abortions

September 11, 2018 /0 Comments/in Research, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

If you’re into a lot of graphs and number crunching, read on. If you’re not, here’s the bottom line: compared to pro-life states, pro-choice states have more insurance coverage of contraception yet have roughly the same rates of unintended pregnancies and much higher rates of abortion. In early 2015 the Washington Post published the article […]

Even third trimester abortions are done for non-medical reasons.

September 10, 2018 /0 Comments/in Later Abortion /by Monica Snyder

We’ve written before (part 1, part 2) about how most late-term abortions are elective, i.e. performed for non-medical reasons (maternal or fetal). The data we’ve been able to find looks at abortions after the first trimester but doesn’t get specific about third trimester abortions. It may not even be possible to find quantifiable data on […]

Sources for Secular Pro-Life’s “Deconstructing Three Pro-Choice Myths” speech.

September 8, 2018 /0 Comments/in Speeches, Discussions, Presentations, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

Today at the University of California, Berkeley, Pro-Life San Francisco is hosting the Let There Be Life Conference, which is designed to promote pro-life unity and education among Californians. Secular Pro-Life will be doing a speech on three pro-choice myths, including where those myths come from and exactly why they are misleading. We hope to post […]

Pro-choice embryologist contradicts his own biology textbook.

August 31, 2018 /0 Comments/in Biology, Debunking /by Monica Snyder

When we say “life begins at conception,” we mean the human life cycle begins with the zygote. But often others think we are trying to say “people [morally relevant and valuable humans] begin at conception.” This is a philosophical claim, not a scientific one. So when others counter with “science can’t tell us when life begins” […]

We asked, you answered: What are best practices for online debate?

August 8, 2018 /0 Comments/in Dialogue strategy, Uncategorized, We Asked You Answered /by Monica Snyder

Last week we asked our Facebook followers to give their advice for online debating. Dozens of people responded. Here is a sampling of the answers: Ask questions: Kelly F: Ask questions. Whether you get an answer or not, the thought is bouncing around in their minds. Mary H:  Ask questions of the other party so they have […]

Link collection: Evidence that pro-life laws mean fewer unplanned pregnancies.

July 31, 2018 /0 Comments/in Research, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

[Update December 2021 – We have recreated and added to the below list here: https://secularprolife.org/pregnancy-rates/] Pro-life laws decrease abortion in two ways. The direct and more obvious way is by decreasing the number of pregnant women who get abortions. A wide body of research (part 1, part 2) demonstrates that when abortion is restricted abortion […]

More evidence that abortion restrictions decrease abortion rates.

July 25, 2018 /0 Comments/in Research, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

[Update December 2021 – We have recreated and added to the below list here: https://secularprolife.org/abortion-rates/] As a follow up to our previous post (Pro-life laws stop abortions. Here’s the evidence.) here in chronological order are more studies suggesting that abortion restrictions do decrease abortion—and not just legal abortion, but abortion in general. Note how many […]

Which decreases abortion rates more: contraception access or abortion restrictions?

July 2, 2018 /0 Comments/in Research, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

Pro-choicers frequently claim that making abortion illegal won’t decrease the number of abortions; it will only decrease the number of safe, legal abortions. They suggest that there is no practical use to restricting abortion legally and that if pro-lifers really cared about decreasing abortion rates, they would focus on decreasing unplanned pregnancies (through better access […]

Are viruses “alive?”

February 13, 2018 /0 Comments/in Biology /by Monica Snyder

The fetus is a living human organism. When I state this long-standing and (at least in the field of biology) undisputed fact, pro-choicers usually have one of three reactions: Reaction 1: They argue the point based on ignorance of basic biology. “A single cell is not an organism.” “A zygote is no different than your […]
