Updates on RU-486

December 6, 2012 /2 Comments/in Abortion pills /by Monica Snyder

Via RH Reality Check: In October a divided panel of Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals judges upheld the state’s law restricting the use of RU-486 as a constitutional restriction to a woman’s right to access abortion. Late last week the full Sixth Circuit denied Planned Parenthood’s request to overturn that October ruling, leaving in place […]

Do human beings begin at fertilization?

November 29, 2012 /3 Comments/in Biology /by Monica Snyder

Hydatidiform moles occur when an egg without a nucleus gets fertilized; this fertilized egg does not have the genetic code of a human organism and will never develop into an infant. Some argue, then, that fertilization isn’t a defining moment and that it’s incorrect to say fertilized eggs are human beings. The Life Training Institute wrote […]

The “Solid” Pro-Choice Stance: Texas Freethought Convention 2012

October 29, 2012 /139 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

Recently Secular Pro-Life participated in an abortion debate at the Texas FreeThought Convention. Pro-life atheist Kristine Kruszelnicki and pro-choice atheist Matt Dillahunty presented their sides, questioned each other, and then answered questions from the crowd. You can watch the entire debate here. I’m pro-life, and I’d like to say the pro-life side dominated the debate, but that […]

Pregnant Workers Fairness Act

October 16, 2012 /4 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) is an Act intended to ensure “reasonable workplace accommodations for workers whose ability to perform the functions of a job are limited by pregnancy, childbirth, or a related medical condition.” The Huffington Post describes the types of women that could be helped by this legislation: When Heather Wiseman began to […]

Gonzales v. Carhart: What can you see?

September 26, 2012 /5 Comments/in Later Abortion /by Monica Snyder

Gonzales v. Carhart is a 2007 Supreme Court case in which the Court upheld the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003. Both the pro-life and pro-choice communities reacted strongly to the case, seeing it as a shift in the Court’s perspective on abortion.  As the New York Times explained, the decision was “the first in […]

Punishment

September 5, 2012 /36 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

I believe that abortion should be far more legally restricted than it currently is, but I don’t think it should be illegal in every circumstance.  I think abortion should be legal if the mother’s life is threatened, for example, or if the mother was raped (see more here.) Because of my particular perspective, I’ve had […]

“Actually, I Think Men Should Have An Opinion About My Uterus”

August 29, 2012 /10 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

The Huffington Post’s Carla Naumberg writes about why she believes men should have a say in reproductive policy.  Given that Carla describes herself as “unabashedly pro-choice” I’m sure there’s much she and I disagree on, but I thought she was spot on here: Most men, however, are not rapists and do not support rape. Most […]

American Ambivalence

August 28, 2012 /12 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

The Boston Globe’s Jeff Jacoby points out that most Americans’ views on abortion don’t fully align with either Republican or Democratic party platforms: Only about 1 in 5 [Americans] ever say that abortion should always be illegal. When asked directly whether abortion should be permitted if a pregnancy results from rape or incest, huge majorities […]

Viability = Personhood?

August 15, 2012 /15 Comments/in Personhood, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

In the never-ending debates over what it means to be a “person” (as distinct from a human being) I’ve seen many people claim that you cannot be a person unless you are viable, i.e. a fetus is not a person until the fetus can live outside the mother’s body. The first counterargument I usually hear […]

Gosnell Updates

August 14, 2012 /3 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

The Associated Press reports on developments in the case of Kermit Gosnell, the infamous abortion doctor arrested in January of 2011 and charged with eight counts of murder.  According to the AP: City prosecutors say the deaths [of a patient and seven babies] were no accident but the result of dangerous medical practices that went […]
