October Recap

November 3, 2021/1 Comment/in SPL Emails, Uncategorized /by admin

Projects
Kelsey has been mentoring a younger pro-lifer through Students for Life of America. Monica has been soliciting and editing guest blog posts from scientists, attorneys, and philosophers. And on October 1, Terrisa launched the Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising (PAAU), a pro-life group for left-leaning people ready to eradicate abortion extremism from the Democratic party. PAAU has infuriated pro-abortion progressives, which suggests Terrisa has struck an important nerve. Learn more here and voice your support on Twitter and Facebook.

In the next few months, we are about to see two major challenges to Roe v. Wade:

  1. Today (November 1) the Supreme Court hears arguments related to the Texas Heartbeat Law (SB8) (see Kelsey’s legal explanation).
  2. On December 1 the Court hears arguments regarding Mississippi’s 15-week, pre-viability ban in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

Many people (on both sides of this debate) expect Dobbs to dismantle or overturn Roe, which would be an historic event. On December 1, the Mississippi Attorney General’s office is organizing a pro-life rally in front of the Supreme Court, and we are going to be there. We want a strong pro-life presence to remind the nation that half of our country opposes abortion. We’re ready for Roe to go. Join us!

Abortion advocacy is loud. Let’s be louder.

Twitter
For October we gained 376 new followers, bringing us to 15,944 total. We sent 417 tweets, which were viewed 631,000 times. The stat includes over 30,000 views of this tweet reminding everyone that abortion is often intrinsically ableist, especially when countries reduce restrictions and even encourage abortions of unborn children diagnosed with disabilities.

See the referenced article here.

Facebook
We are at 36,230 followers on Facebook. Our content was viewed 311,905 times, including 11,186 views of our post asking for feedback on protest sign designs. Which slogan do you prefer?

Blogger
Our three most-read blog posts for October, in increasing order:

  • Embryos & metaphysical personhood: both biology & philosophy support the pro-life case: Guest Blogger Kristina Artuković argues all living humans (including embryos) are in active relationship with personhood: they are either attaining, retaining, or restoring personhood at all times.
  • Study: Women Explain Their Abortions More in Terms of Religion and Motherhood than Autonomy: Guest Blogger Sarah St. Onge analyzes a study that reveals the highly emotional and often religious justifications women use for getting abortions.
  • Why Artificial Wombs Pose a Challenge to Pro-choice Personhood Arguments: Guest Blogger Dr. Alex Hyun analyzes a thought experiment about how to classify zygotes, embryos, and fetuses gestating in artificial wombs and the implications the classification has for fetuses in human wombs.

Bonus post: An Open Letter to a Young Texan: Kelsey pens a powerful letter to an unborn child recently saved by the Texas Heartbeat Bill, reminding them, and us, that their life has value.

What You Can Do
There are plenty of ways to help with pro-life work. This month you could:

  • Join in the #EmpowerWomenPromoteLife Dobbs rally in DC on December 1. If you can’t attend, consider donating travel money for other pro-lifers to attend. Also check whether there are local rallies regarding Dobbs, and join in support of the overturning of Roe v Wade.
  • Write letters to the editors of local papers voicing your opposition to Roe, support for Dobbs, or any other current pro-life issue.
  • Email Monica (monica@secularprolife.org) if you’re interested in summarizing, analyzing, or opining on abortion-related peer-reviewed research.
  • And, of course, your donations always help:

If you don’t use Paypal, you can also find us on Venmo (@secularprolife – under “Business” rather than “People”) or go to our Facebook page and click the blue “Donate” button under our cover photo on the right.

As the national conversation on abortion intensifies, it’s more important than ever that we demonstrate that anyone can–and everyone should–oppose abortion. Thanks to you, we are working to change minds, transform our culture, and protect our prenatal children. Every donation supports our ability to provide nonsectarian, nonpartisan arguments against abortion. Please donate today.
