Ask a Pro-Life Atheist: T.R.
Once a month or so, the Secular Pro-Life blog features a short interview with a pro-life atheist or agnostic. (See the full series of interviews.) Although Secular Pro-Life is not exclusively for atheists and agnostics, historically, they have played a key role in the organization. As non-religious pro-lifers become more prominent in the pro-life movement, we’re excited for the opportunity to share their stories.
This month, we welcome pro-life atheist T.R.
How did you arrive at the anti-abortion position?
I have always had an anti-abortion stance as long as I can remember. It just seems like common sense not to murder the most innocent and most vulnerable people in our society.
How did you arrive at the atheist position?
Lots of things. The start of it was probably the problem with evil.
“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?”
How do you contribute to the cause of saving lives in the womb?
I try to support groups like this one and pregnancy crisis centers that do not perform abortions.
What words of wisdom do you have to share?
I am reluctant to consider my words of wisdom, but anyone who claims that someone doesn’t have the right to use their body, then don’t make that person solely dependent upon you for survival. You put that child in the position they are in. It is now your responsibility to keep them alive at least long enough that someone else can take over their care.
