“SPL has impacted my boldness for advocacy.” Activists speak up.
This Giving Tuesday, we’re highlighting pro-lifers who have been emboldened by Secular Pro-Life’s work. Their stories affirm how essential inclusivity and facts-based arguments are to upending pro-choice narratives. As the national debate rages on, it’s more important than ever that pro-life organizations not only make space for pro-lifers from every walk, but also equip and empower them.
We hope that this series inspires you to support Secular Pro-Life through our Giving Tuesday campaign so that we can continue mobilizing diverse pro-lifers everywhere.
We’ve given Elise tools for the fight.
Elise writes: “When I searched for ‘secular pro-life’ on Facebook in 2018, I was delighted to find a page that fit that description exactly. The Women’s March was coming up, and I felt an urgency to find counter-evidence to the infamous Guttmacher study in the Lancet that claimed abortion bans made the occurrence of unsafe abortion skyrocket.
I was prepared, but reluctant, to concede that abortion should not be banned, given I could not debunk the myth that abortion bans don’t work. Fortunately, Secular Pro-Life had just published the post International unsafe abortion studies are highly flawed, and I was thrilled by the evidence they presented. Between this post and Pro-life laws stop abortions from 2017, I finally had reasoning and data to back up my claim that abortion bans not only don’t harm women, but also save children.
I was deeply impressed by SPL’s argument against abortion, as well as their pro-contraception stance. It was the proof I needed that I could be pro-life without imposing my religion on others, and it encouraged me to begin speaking out against abortion confidently online. Years later, I am now a full-time pro-life activist.
Without Secular Pro-Life, I would not have dedicated my life to fighting for the preborn. Heck, I probably wouldn’t even have remained pro-life! The work of Secular Pro-Life saves lives, mine included.”
We’ve given Leigh Ann new boldness.
Leigh Ann writes: “I will tell you straight up, SPL’s work has directly impacted my boldness when talking about abortion. It’s like any injustice; when you get close to it and you see the real data, the real brutality for what it is, you become emboldened to fight against it. Before that, it just feels like this kind of mythological thing and not understanding allows you to not care. But your posts give me so much information; such wonderful talking points to be able to speak to secular friends who are pro-choice.
Knowledge makes you confident, but it’s hard to know where to start. Even just the push to just show up pro-life, just let people know that you don’t agree. I just did that the other day. A friend made this obscene, stupid stereotypical comment, and I was just like ‘Hi…from your friendly neighborhood pro-lifer: just want you to know that your tweet isn’t great, and here’s why.’ The SPL movement has been really impactful in my boldness for advocacy.“
We’ve given Allie the research she needed.
Allie writes: “I’ve been doing everything from sidewalk counseling to testifying at hearings about abortion legislation & more in Ohio for a few years now. SPL provides vital resources for activists like me who need to have statistics and other science-based information to help us fight against a culture of death.
In particular here in Ohio, SPL’s research on ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, and emergency care for preghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w2hhak6Kc0&ab_channel=secularprolifenant women has been absolutely vital in combating misinformation in our state. I’m so thankful for the work SPL does. They make it so that activists like me can focus on boots-on-the-ground efforts rather than dedicating our limited time and resources to tracking down the citations we need if we’re going to win hearts and minds.”
