How secular pro-choicers become secular pro-lifers

August 23, 2024 in Dialogue strategy, Pro-Life Demographics, Religion, Uncategorized, We Asked You Answered /by Monica Snyder

In mid-July we launched our survey of non-traditional pro-lifers. Respondents described their religious views and whether they’ve always opposed abortion. Those who haven’t always opposed abortion elaborated on what changed their minds. Below is a selection of those answers from people who described themselves as “atheist” or “agnostic.” You can also see many similar answers […]

“Aborting my baby.” Women describe their aborted embryos as their children.

August 21, 2024 in Miscarriage & Pregnancy Loss, Uncategorized, Your Stories /by Monica Snyder

Many pro-choicers think of embryos and fetuses as “clumps of cells.” They may mean figuratively (philosophically unimportant biomatter) or literally (spheres of undifferentiated cells). Either way, these pro-choicers often act as if only zealous anti-abortion activists view embryos as human beings. They dismiss the idea that embryos are children as a niche and archaic religious […]

We asked, you answered: Times the pro-life movement made you feel welcome

August 16, 2024 in Pro-Life Demographics, Uncategorized, We Asked You Answered /by Monica Snyder

Pro-lifers are stereotyped as older religious (Christian) conservative straight white men. And while we want older Christian conservative straight white men to be pro-life, we know that these six characteristics are ill-fitting descriptions of millions of the people who oppose abortion. We describe these groups as the “non-traditional” pro-lifers. Sometimes non-traditional pro-lifers have a tenuous […]

Medical community, ableism, and Trisomy 18

August 12, 2024 in Ableism, Later Abortion, They Can Hear You, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

Trisomy 18 ‘fatality’ ignores worth of born, living children with the condition Important article for your consideration: “Texas woman seeking abortion argued Trisomy 18 is lethal. Michigan children prove it’s not.” The article profiles several families in Michigan with children with Trisomy 18. One such family is that of Jewel and her daughter, CC: “CC […]

We asked, you answered: How could the pro-life movement be more accessible?

August 9, 2024 in Pro-Life Demographics, Uncategorized, We Asked You Answered /by Monica Snyder

Pro-lifers are stereotyped as older religious (Christian) conservative straight white men. Much of this stereotype is reinforced externally by pro-choicers as well as major cultural institutions (e.g. media, Hollywood). Often pro-choicers try to draw rigid tribal lines and use them to sidestep actual debate (“no uterus, no opinion,” “stop pushing your religion on everyone,” etc). […]

8 reasons to talk about women who struggle after abortion

August 2, 2024 in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

If you or someone you know is struggling after an abortion experience, check out Support After Abortion. When we at Secular Pro-Life talk about the women who emotionally or psychologically struggle with their abortions, our point is not that their struggles are reasons to ban abortion. There are plenty of decisions people may suffer from […]

Describing miscarriage as “intrauterine death” threatens abortion rights

July 26, 2024 in Miscarriage & Pregnancy Loss, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

In 2023, Jessalyn Bohn wrote “When Words Fail: ‘Miscarriage,’ Referential Ambiguity, and Psychological Harm.” She called for more precision and sensitivity when describing pregnancy loss. About a year later, Belinda Alievska wrote some reflections of Bohn’s work: The Implications of Revising The Terminology of Pregnancy Loss. Specifically Alievska worried that Bohn’s proposed phrase “intrauterine death” […]

Did Texas’ Heartbeat Law increase infant mortality rates?

June 27, 2024 in Ableism, Later Abortion, Legislation, laws, & court cases, Research, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

A transcription of the video, with source links and post-video notes, follows. A new study purports to show an increase in infant mortality in Texas due to their Heartbeat Bill: their September 2021, approximately six week abortion ban. Specifically, the study found an excess of 216 infant deaths, or a 12.7% increase over what they […]

Pivoting to Unwanted and Coerced Abortion: A Manifesto

June 19, 2024 in Legislation, laws, & court cases, Research, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

The following is a reprint from Public Discourse. This article was co-authored by Monica Snyder (SPL’s Executive Director), Charles Camosy, and Eric Scheidler. While we continue to seek ways to extend robust legal protection to prenatal children and to persuade our pro-choice brothers and sisters that such laws are necessary to forge a truly just […]

Recap: SPL’s 2024 Trivia Night

May 24, 2024 in Administrative, They Can Hear You, Uncategorized, Your Stories /by Monica Snyder

On May 18, we hosted Secular Pro-Life’s 2nd annual trivia night outside St. Louis, Missouri. It was fantastic. SPL’s primary mission is to advance secular arguments against abortion. But our mission includes two additional parts: make space for non-traditional (especially non-religious) pro-life people, and build interfaith coalitions (people of any faith or no faith) to […]
