Twisting Facts to Suit Theories

June 4, 2012 /35 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

Thank you, Holmes. It’s very easy to form an opinion based on emotion or partial facts, and then cling to that opinion and filter further information accordingly (see “confirmation bias“).   I would like the pro-life movement as a whole, and Secular Pro-Life particularly, to transcend this problem. I want ours to be an environment […]

“No Uterus, No Opinion”

June 1, 2012 /23 Comments/in Pro-Life Demographics, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

First, it makes no sense to tell people who believe human rights are being violated to mind their own business.  (See also: “Don’t like abortion? Don’t have one.”) Second, views on abortion show no correlation to gender.  Even if we could forever silence men on the topic, the abortion debate would remain intractable. Third, it’s […]

Emotional Effects

May 28, 2012 /7 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

How women feel about their abortions varies. Sometimes the pro-life side underscores the negative mental and emotional impacts for post-abortive women.  Pro-choice advocates often reject such claims and instead suggest women frequently feel relief after an abortion. Other times the pro-choice side claims most women don’t even want abortions, but feel they have no choice due […]

Open Adoption

May 21, 2012 /3 Comments/in Adoption & Foster Care, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

Homepage for the Independent Adoption Center. Among the many reasons women cite for obtaining abortions are the following: Having a child would interfere with the woman’s education, work, or ability to care for dependents; The woman cannot afford a baby; and/or The woman is having relationship problems/does not want to be a single mother. It seems adoption would […]

“Girls become lovers who turn into mothers.”

May 13, 2012 /0 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

(I woke up with the above-quoted John Mayer song stuck in my head.  Seems fitting.) (Via Pinterest) My first niece (whom I will call “Z”) was due last Tuesday, but still hasn’t made her appearance.  We are all very (impatiently) excited for Z’s arrival, but in the interim the pregnancy has gotten increasingly uncomfortable for […]

Who are Pro-Lifers?

April 26, 2012 /6 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

According to Gallup, Americans are split relatively evenly regarding the abortion debate: 47% describe themselves as “pro-life,” 45% “pro-choice.”  Half of America is pro-life, but that doesn’t tell us a great deal.  Which people are included in the pro-life half? Old, white men? The same Gallup poll found that those who call themselves “pro-life” include: […]

Arguing For The Rape Exception

April 7, 2012 /22 Comments/in Bodily Rights, Rape Exception /by Monica Snyder

[This post is the first in a point-counterpoint debate.  See the argument against the rape exception here.] According to Gallup, 59% of self-described pro-lifers believe abortion should be legal in cases of rape.  This is a higher percentage than I expected.  Anecdotally, it seems most pro-lifers I interact with believe there should be no rape […]

Atheists don’t believe in us.

March 30, 2012 /55 Comments/in Religion /by Monica Snyder

This past weekend was both the Reason Rally and the American Atheists Convention. SPL spends a lot of time advocating for secularism in the pro-life movement; last weekend was a great opportunity to advocate for pro-life positions in the secular movement. SPL arranged to have a table at the convention in the hopes of reaching […]
