Ask a Pro-Life Atheist: Ilan
Once a month or so, the Secular Pro-Life blog features a short interview with a pro-life atheist or agnostic. (See the full series of interviews here.) Although Secular Pro-Life is not exclusively for atheists and agnostics, historically, they have played a key role in the organization. As they become more prominent in the pro-life movement generally, we’re excited for the opportunity to share their stories. This month, we welcome pro-life atheist: Ilan.
How did you arrive at the anti-abortion position?
I started questioning all my political stances when I graduated high school. I realized they had been heavily influenced by the people around me, and didn’t represent my actual beliefs. I started watching videos on abortion from both pro-choice and pro-life sources, and realized how inhumane it is. I have a lot of compassion for a lot of the women who choose this option, but this is not the way!

How did you arrive at the atheist position?
I was born and raised without a god. I’ve done a lot of research on the topic, and I’ve had long and deep discussions with my Christian friend. There were times in my life where I would’ve loved to believe in a god for guidance, but I couldn’t bring myself to do so.
How do you contribute to the cause of saving lives in the womb?
I engage in discussions about the Pro-Life movement, both with friends/family, and on the internet. I’ve managed to convince at least a dozen people to join our side by providing sources and showing them what abortion actually is. I would love to do more, but it’s difficult where I live. I’m very openly pro-life, which unfortunately gets me a lot of hate and death wishes.
What words of wisdom do you have to share?
Please don’t believe everything the abortion lobby tells you! We pro-lifers are very concerned with the mother’s health and well-being. There are a lot of pro-life organizations that provide a lot more resources for mothers than Planned Parenthood, especially after the birth of their child. We care deeply about the wellbeing of both mother and child; we simply do not believe that anyone should be able to take an innocent life! We despise abortion, but we LOVE women and children!
