I’m not anti-sex. I’m anti-crisis pregnancy.

March 17, 2023/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

I do not care about your sex life.

As long as we’re talking about consenting adults, I don’t care who you have sex with or when or why. I hope everyone involved stays safe and healthy, but aside from those factors it’s not just that I don’t care. I’m actively uninterested.

And yet, like many people who oppose abortion, I will point out that if getting pregnant would be a crisis, you should avoid having procreative sex.

Typically if I mention what I consider to be this fairly obvious point, pro-choice people are quick to accuse me of hating sex or wanting to punish people for having sex or something along those lines. The accusations are nonsense, for several reasons:

1. I’ve said if getting pregnant would be a crisis, you should avoid having procreative sex.

By that I mean sexual activity that can result in pregnancy, meaning sexual activity that involves sperm going into a vagina (and, some would argue, only during the few days of a month surrounding ovulation). Procreative sex is not the only form of sex, much less the only way to be sexually intimate or to have an orgasm. But it is the only form of sex I’m objecting to, because my concern here isn’t sex (or intimacy, orgasms, etc.). My concern here is people getting pregnant in difficult or desperate situations.

2. I’ve said if getting pregnant would be a crisis, you should avoid having procreative sex.

I didn’t say you should never have sex. I didn’t say you shouldn’t have sex unless you’re married, or in love. I didn’t say you should have sex only with certain genders, or anything along those lines. I said you should avoid procreative sex specifically if getting pregnant would be a crisis.

3. I’ve said if getting pregnant would be a crisis, you should avoid having procreative sex.

If you don’t particularly want to get pregnant but it wouldn’t be a crisis if you did, and you want to have (specifically procreative) sex without the intention of pregnancy, okay. I have no objection. I don’t believe sex is only for having children. That’s why I’m not against vasectomies or tubal ligations. It’s why I want people to have access to and education about contraception. I have no problem with people who don’t specifically want kids having sex. I have a problem with people risking pregnancies that would be a crisis for them.

None of this is about wanting to control people’s sex lives or enforce any particular sexual ethic. It’s about asking people to avoid a situation that would make them so desperate they’d consider killing someone else to get out of it.
