Checking in on the Trump Veepstakes

July 8, 2024/in Uncategorized /by Kelsey Hazzard

Donald Trump is leading in the polls, and he is expected to announce his running mate soon. Although President Trump nominated Supreme Court Justices who recognized Roe v. Wade as bad law, his more recent comments make it clear that he does not support the right to life for all unborn Americans. (Hey, don’t say we didn’t warn you.)

Trump can only serve one more term, and his vice president will have a natural leadership role as the Republican Party navigates its post-MAGA future. His running mate selection could have huge, life-or-death consequences in the long run.

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum signed a strong pro-life law, and an official North Dakota website compiles life-affirming resources for mothers in need. However, he has said that he does not support federal action to protect babies in pro-abortion states.

Florida Rep. Byron Donalds has been in Congress since 2020. During that time, he has consistently voted in favor of pro-life legislation and against pro-abortion bills. He also has a strong personal story to bring to the conversation: he was raised by a single mother in New York City, where more Black children are aborted than born.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio ran for president in the 2016 election on a pro-life platform, stating “all human life, irrespective of the circumstance in which it came into being, is worthy of protection.” He has earned the endorsement of the National Right to Life Committee every year since 2011.

South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, like Rubio, has earned 100% ratings from NRLC for over a decade. He has publicly disagreed with Trump on abortion, advocating a 15-week limit at the federal level (with earlier protections permitted at the state level). He also introduced a bill to expand the child tax credit to unborn children.

New York Rep. Elise Stefanik has a strong pro-life voting record, earning an A+ rating from Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America. She speaks eloquently on the issue. And she happens to be the eleventh Congresswoman to give birth while in office, giving her a valuable perspective on the needs of working mothers.

Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance famously has a working-class background, which normally would imply a pro-life perspective. Don’t be fooled. In a recent Meet the Press interview, Senator Vance stated that he supports access to abortion drugs. In the same interview, he failed to challenge the journalist’s disinformation about third-trimester abortions.

Who do you want to see as Trump’s running mate?
