The Abortion Industry is No Friend of Labor

Planned Parenthood’s cruelty toward unborn children is well-known; it killed 345,672 in 2019 alone. This Labor Day, it’s also worth remembering that Planned Parenthood isn’t even kind to its own employees.

The New York Times broke the story of Planned Parenthood’s widespread pregnancy discrimination, which is prohibited by federal law. The nation’s largest abortion chain “declined to hire pregnant job candidates, refused requests by expecting mothers to take breaks and in some cases pushed them out of their jobs after they gave birth, according to current and former employees in California, Texas, North Carolina and New York.” Employees at New York locations also endured the leadership of a racist, verbally abusive, financially irresponsible “autocrat.” And let’s not forget Planned Parenthood’s treatment of whistleblowers, who are illegally fired after pointing out health and safety problems.

Planned Parenthood affiliates nationwide are hostile to union organizing that might improve working conditions. The same is true of the Guttmacher Institute, a pro-abortion think tank which hired a union-busting law firm. Guttmacher’s work culture is “toxic” and racist, according to a December 2021 investigative report:

Internally, workers say they have used every tool at their disposal—exit interviews, surveys, formal complaints, and even whistleblower reports to the board—in an effort to get Guttmacher management to address “systemic problems.” According to former and current staff members in the D.C. office, these problems include a pattern of tokenizing or pushing out staff of color (if they’re hired at all), retaliating against employees who raise equity and justice issues, verbally abusing staff, and systematically failing to meaningfully engage with reproductive justice organizations whose work centers Black women.
