“The mother’s life is always at risk”

A woman’s risk, including death, are higher pregnant than not pregnant.

Dr. Vicki Chan (@vickichanmd on TikTok), “The Risks of Pregnancy: Understanding Women’s Health.”

A woman’s risk of being fatally killed in a car crash is a lot higher if she is driving on the highway than if she is walking around her neighborhood. Should she be allowed to preemptively kill other drivers because they might end up crashing into her? Do we usually make any distinctions socially or legally between people who kill someone who is trying to kill them versus people who kill someone when there was no major threat to their life?

If we are going to give the contingency that abortions will be allowed in cases where the mother’s life is in danger, that would apply to all cases of pregnancy.

Dr. Vicki Chan

In 2022, the United States maternal mortality rate was 22.3 deaths per 100,000 live births. That means, absent any specific other information, every woman who’s pregnant is facing a 0.02% chance of death. Do you think 0.02% chance of death is a high enough chance to say you should be allowed to have someone else killed to protect yourself?

The mother’s life is always at risk.

Dr. Vicki Chan

Everyone’s life is always at risk, unless you know someone who’s immortal. This could apply to anyone, at any time. It takes a lot more than that to say, “Therefore, it should be legal to kill someone else.” Abortion kills human beings. It’s weird how often pro-choice arguments try to gloss over that part.
