THURSDAY: Adriana Smith and pregnancy after brain death

May 21, 2025/in Administrative, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

Hi all,

Herb Geraghty (SPL’s Chief Communications Officer) and I are having an important discussion live this Thursday, May 22. If you’re tired of hot takes, join us for something deeper and more balanced.

Last week multiple SPL followers messaged us asking for clarification on the story of Adriana Smith, a mother declared brain dead when she was 9 weeks pregnant. A Georgia hospital has been keeping her on life support and her son is now about 22 weeks gestation. Doctors are hoping to get him to 32 weeks.

Smith’s mother reports that doctors told the family they have no legal say in this situation because of Georgia’s heartbeat law.  We wrote about the case in detail here.

A lot of people are upset and confused about this story, and the complexity is a bit much for a Tiktok. So Herb and I are going to walk through it in long-form live on Thursday. We’ll tackle what’s written in law, what’s debated in ethics, and what’s lost in pro-life vs. pro-choice rhetoric. If you value clarity over conflict, you’ll want to be part of this.

We’re streaming Thursday, May 22, at 7:30p CST/8:30p EST. Join us.

See you there,
