Reflections on Life/Peace/Justice
Last weekend, Secular Pro-Life had a fantastic experience as always at the Life/Peace/Justice conference, organized by Rehumanize International. L/P/J is a unique conference that gathers advocates from a wide range of social movements to learn from one another. I had the opportunity to teach attendees about secular pro-life advocacy (video here!) and in return, I was educated by presenters who are working to (among other things) resettle Syrian refugees in Canada, advance disability rights, combat racism, and improve local government.
Naturally, I also treasured the opportunity to spend time with old friends from organizations like the Pro-Life Alliance for Gays and Lesbians, Americans United for Life, New Wave Feminists, and (of course) Rehumanize International. And I got to meet the clever human behind Dank Pro-Life Memes for the first time, who was treated as something of a celebrity.
New to L/P/J this year was what I hope to be the first of many Create | Encounter parties. It was sort of a conference within the conference, with a focus on life-affirming art, including visual art, poetry, prose, music, and film. The short film Flower (available on Vimeo) is certainly worth your fifteen minutes. And the excerpt from Only Human (a screenplay written by yours truly) was well-received; I gave away about 30 signed copies!
November and December will not involve much travel for SPL, but you’ll definitely get the chance to meet up with us in January for the Walk for Life in San Francisco and the March for Life in Washington, D.C. Stay tuned for updates!
