Abortion laws decrease abortion rates internationally, but high unintended pregnancy rates can mask this effect

December 17, 2021 /4 Comments/in Legislation, laws, & court cases, Research, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

[Esta publicación está disponible en español aquí.] [A version of this post is available on Twitter here.] In September 2020, The Lancet published “Unintended pregnancy and abortion by income, region, and the legal status of abortion: estimates from a comprehensive model for 1990-2019.” The study discussed three factors: Higher UIP drives up abortion rates. Stricter abortion […]

If SCOTUS wants to stay out of religious debates, it should overturn Roe v. Wade

December 6, 2021 /0 Comments/in Biology, Legislation, laws, & court cases, Religion, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

I originally wrote this article for TownHall. Reprinted here with permission. [Esta publicación está disponible en español aquí.] On December 1 the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the case debating the constitutionality of Mississippi’s Gestational Age Act, which many believe may lead to the Supreme Court weakening or […]

Getting an ultrasound the morning the Texas Heartbeat Law went into effect

December 6, 2021 /0 Comments/in Biology, Miscarriage & Pregnancy Loss, Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

I’ve long wanted four children. I have a 6-year-old daughter, a 4-year-old daughter, and a 2-year-old son. My son was originally a twin, but we lost his sibling in the first trimester. I grieved (and still grieve), but I also knew that pregnancies with multiples often have problems, and I was not afraid to try […]

Thanks for helping us go to the Dobbs rally!

December 4, 2021 /3 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

The Dobbs rally was excellent. Our signs and banner got a lot of attention: images ended up in major outlets such as the Los Angeles Times and New York Times and got some notice from pro-choice commentators and bloggers. Meanwhile my speech about the erasure of pro-life women and the harm of destigmatized abortion went over […]

During the next 24 hours, people everywhere are coming together to celebrate generosity and support the causes we care about most through Giving Tuesday. At Secular Pro-Life, our primary mission is to advance nonpartisan, secular arguments against abortion. Thanks to our donors and volunteers, in the last 12 months our content was viewed a record-breaking […]

We’re speaking at the Dobbs rally!

November 19, 2021 /1 Comment/in Uncategorized /by Monica Snyder

On December 1 the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the case regarding Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban: Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Many people on both sides of this debate expect Dobbs to upend Roe v. Wade, which would be an historic event. The Mississippi Attorney General’s office is organizing a pro-life rally that morning in front of the Supreme […]

Pro-choice public writing professor deletes source showing embryos have hearts

September 24, 2021 /0 Comments/in Biology /by Monica Snyder

On September 7, 2021, Ms. Magazine published a piece by Carrie Baker titled “Media Repeat Junk Science Behind Abortion Ban Laws: Check the Science — There is No Heartbeat at Six Weeks.” Baker’s not-really-a-heartbeat piece followed the same general format as the many others before it: cite nothing but interviews and replace arguments with ambiguity.  […]

5 Benefits of the Texas Heartbeat Bill

September 22, 2021 /0 Comments/in Legislation, laws, & court cases /by Monica Snyder

There has been no shortage of pushback to SB 8, the Texas bill that bans almost all abortions after an embryonic heartbeat can be detected (about 4 weeks after fertilization, so 6 weeks gestation/LMP). Even many pro-lifers have expressed skepticism as to whether this bill is a good idea, often focused on concerns about the […]
