4 ways we welcome non-traditional pro-lifers.
SPL prioritizes outreach to non-traditional pro-lifers.
Part of SPL’s mission is to make space for non-traditional pro-lifers. In our Building Bridges presentation, I explain the difference between “traditional” and “non-traditional”:
Countless non-traditional pro-lifers are opposed to abortion but think they’re alone. All their friends are pro-choice, and the traditional pro-life movement can seem disinterested or even hostile to them. These pro-lifers often feel siloed, and stay silent.
This is an enormous waste. We want everyone actively opposing abortion.
At SPL here’s how we prioritize outreach to non-traditional pro-lifers:
1. We amplify non-traditional voices.
In June we launched a survey of LGBT pro-lifers, and in July we expanded that to a survey of all non-traditional pro-lifers. Hundreds responded, including people asking SPL to connect them to pro-life volunteer opportunities. We also identified themes in the responses and published insights for the broader pro-life movement to consider.

2. We create “welcome in” content.
This content explicitly states that these demographics can and should be pro-life, as with one of our most popular images of 2024:
3. We train pro-lifers in pro-choice circles on how to “come out” as pro-life.
We specifically talk about how to do this without feeling pressured to argue or debate the issue.
4. We create connections to let isolated non-traditional pro-lifers know they are not alone.
Read here about how Ann (an agnostic and lifelong Democrat) felt profoundly lonely–until she found SPL.
We’re activating people who don’t resonate with traditional pro-life messaging. We’re teaching others to do the same. This is how we expand a movement.
We’re able to all this because of your donations. You helped us hire our communications intern, who designed our LGBT pro-lifers survey and creates “visibility” videos. You sponsored volunteer training to create content like our “Ask an Atheist” interview series. You supported our trivia night, which drew non-traditional pro-lifers from multiple states and featured a pro-life atheist explaining how SPL inspired her to carry her pregnancy:
These folks are surrounded by people telling them “You can’t be a Democrat and pro-life. You can’t be queer and pro-life. You can’t be an atheist and pro-life.”
SPL is here to say, loudly, “Actually we can. And we are. Cope.” (tweet this) Your support empowers us to say that–especially right now.
Support our work. Help us get our full $15k matching grant
For 2024 we were projected to have a $23,000 budget gap. To our delighted shock, a long-time SPL donor offered a $15,000 matching grant until the year’s end. If we match the full amount, that’s $30,000, eliminating our budget gap and then some.
You guys have already matched $5,500. That means an $11,000-sized crack in our $23,000-sized dam. (Or some equally clever analogy, you get the point.)
This is absolutely fantastic. It also means we’ve got room to match another $9,500 (for $19,000 to SPL in total, wow). If you can pitch in, please do. Consider an extra gift to SPL or, if you were already planning on giving, a slightly larger gift. Help us hit our mark!
And whether you can give or not, another powerful way to advocate is to recommend us to your friends and family. Suggest SPL as a worthy nonprofit for their 2024 charitable giving. They can go to secularprolife.org and click the “donate” button. Super simple support.
Thank you for helping us roll out the welcome mat for all types of people who are pro-life.
