We find the general public continues to be pretty much entirely unaware of how late in pregnancy it is legal to perform abortions in some places in the country, so I want to give you another example.
This is the RISE Collective; it is an abortion clinic in Colorado. Colorado has no gestational limits on abortion, and if you go to their own website, they talk about how they’re trained in areas that only a handful of clinics in the country have experience, and by that, of course, they mean they can perform abortions very very late in pregnancy.
They emphasize clearly that abortion at any stage in pregnancy is legal in Colorado, and a lot of times when we point this out, people will say “people are only getting abortions late in pregnancy if there’s some kind of medical emergency, fatal fetal anomalies.” The RISE Collective makes no pretense that there are any medical requirements to obtain a later abortion. They just say “your reason is yours” at any stage in pregnancy.
They have a section on their website where they explain the procedure for abortion when you are past 28-weeks pregnant. Keep in mind that children born after 28 weeks have something like a 95% survival rate.
This is where the moderate pro-choice person will say “there’s no killing involved,” that abortion is just “termination of pregnancy,” so if it’s after viability, then the child is simply born alive. Of course, we know that’s not true.
They usually do some kind of feticide injection into the fetal heart, or sometimes the brain, or sometimes the amniotic fluid to induce demise, meaning make sure the baby is dead way before they actually try to do the extraction part, which is usually either labor and delivery or dismemberment, or, the way they put it, they will “safely and gently end the pregnancy before the procedure.”
Just to really emphasize that “end the pregnancy” is not a euphemism for giving live birth, they end the pregnancy on day one with this injection, and then on day two they continue dilation, and on day three they have your water broken. “End the pregnancy” is the euphemism for end the life of the fetus. The fetus stays in your body for another day or two before they do other things to extract the body.
Again, all the information I’m giving you—the screen caps, the quotes—these are from the abortion clinic’s own website. It’s not pro-life propaganda. They are telling you themselves that they will perform abortions well past viability for any reason, and they do not result in live birth.
