Ask a Pro-Life Agnostic: J.A.
Once a month or so, the Secular Pro-Life blog features a short interview with a pro-life atheist or agnostic. (See the full series of interviews here.) Although Secular Pro-Life is not exclusively for atheists and agnostics, historically they have played a key role in the organization. As they become more prominent in the pro-life movement generally, we’re excited for the opportunity to share their stories. This month, we welcome agnostic J.A.
How did you arrive at the anti-abortion position?
When I first learned what abortion is, factually, with no opinion given one way or another, I instantly knew it was wrong. I’ve been listening with an open mind to pro-choice arguments for more than 40 years and they haven’t gotten any more persuasive; in fact, I find current pro-choice arguments worse than ever, and pro-life arguments stronger than ever.

How did you arrive at the agnostic position?
I’m very spiritual but I don’t find it necessary to have specific beliefs about the non/existence of God. It just isn’t relevant to me way or another.
How do you contribute to the cause of saving lives in the womb?
I advocate the pro-life position whenever I can, including broader policies for social welfare and maternal support, not just being anti-abortion.
What words of wisdom do you have to share?
Always look for the common ground, and work from there.
