Ask a Pro-Life Atheist: Anonymous
Once a month or so, the Secular Pro-Life blog features a short interview with a pro-life atheist or agnostic. (See the full series of interviews.) Although Secular Pro-Life is not exclusively for atheists and agnostics, historically, they have played a key role in the organization. As non-religious pro-lifers become more prominent in the pro-life movement, we’re excited for the opportunity to share their stories.
This month, we welcome an anonymous pro-life atheist.
How did you arrive at the anti-abortion position?
As someone who is adopted, I understand that people like me need to be given the chance to live. It’s not a question of theology or life being “sacred” due to religion. It’s simple: conception leads to life. The baby’s future life matters, and ending or preventing it is murder.

How did you arrive at the atheist position?
I was raised in a Christian household but always had doubts due to the abundance of suffering around me and the conflicting messages of various religions. Rather than having specific beliefs regarding the inexistence of any higher power, I am simply unconvinced of any religion.
How do you contribute to the cause of saving lives in the womb?
By sharing my story with others and emphasizing my perspective that it’s not about religious control but preventing murder. Just raising awareness of pro-lifers who are not religious fanatics!
What words of wisdom do you have to share?
Always greet violence and hatred with kindness. Easier said than done, but we need to be better than those who hate the pro-life movement and the advocacy for the unborn.
