Ask a Pro-Life Atheist: J.C.
Once a month or so, the Secular Pro-Life blog features a short interview with a pro-life atheist or agnostic. (See the full series of interviews here.) Although Secular Pro-Life is not exclusively for atheists and agnostics, historically they have played a key role in the organization. As they become more prominent in the pro-life movement generally, we’re excited for the opportunity to share their stories. This month, we welcome pro-life atheist, J.C.
How did you arrive at the anti-abortion position?
As a very young adult, I was pro-abortion. Like many young girls, the idea of a pregnancy at that age was overwhelming and the fear of having future plans derailed loomed large. Fortunately, I never had cause to have one by choice. However, ten years later, I miscarried a child that my husband and I both wanted very much. Only after that did I understand the importance, both at the individual and the societal level, of being willing to protect your young (even unborn) at all costs. I clearly understood that this was a person, even not yet fully formed, and they should have every right to life that the rest of us have, if at all possible. Since then my beliefs have only grown stronger; that abortion in any form is morally wrong and goes against what should be our nature.

How did you arrive at the atheist position?
I was not raised with God or religion and as an adult it just didn’t make sense to me.
How do you contribute to the cause of saving lives in the womb?
Financially, mostly, through donations to pro-life organizations.
What words of wisdom do you have to share?
As we toss aside life so cavalierly, we de-humanize ourselves.
If you appreciate our work and would like to help, one of the most effective ways to do so is to become a monthly donor. You can also give a one time donation here or volunteer with us here.
