Jen Roth on Point of Inquiry

September 18, 2010/1 Comment/in Uncategorized /by Kelsey Hazzard

Jen Roth, a longtime SecularProLife.org supporter and the co-founder of All Our Lives, was recently interviewed on Point of Inquiry, an atheist online radio program. She discusses the human rights argument against abortion, noting that this secular argument is used by religious and non-religious pro-lifers alike. I especially liked this comment, which really says it all:

A lot of the arguments against ascribing full humanity, full personhood, to the human fetus are actually not so much rational in nature. They’re often cloaked in rationality, but I often find that they’re very emotional in nature. “Oh, it’s so small, that can’t possibly be a human.” “Look at something the size of the period at the end of this sentence; it’s a blob of cells, how can that possibly…” Well, these are emotional arguments. These aren’t rational, philosophical arguments. They’re just saying “Well, this looks different from me, this functions different from me, therefore this can’t be fully human.” If you look back over the course of history, that’s never been an argument that we’ve been particularly proud of.

Listen to the full interview here. Well done, Jen!

I realize the last link is a voice only. Do it have a transcript for the radio? Just wonder.
