SPL took to social media to ask followers:
List any points where you agree with the opposing side in the abortion debate.
Responses varied greatly, from both pro-life and pro-choice commenters. Here are some that stood out.
Dermont K.: Pregnancy can be difficult for many mothers. Pregnancy can present risks to the life and/or health of a mother. Raising a child in difficult social/financial circumstances can be undesirable. None of these or any other factors justify the intentional destruction of human life.
Myriam A.: Moms should be better supported through pregnancy and postpartum than they currently are.
Allison T.: I think it’s awful that a rapist can sue for child visitation. That shouldn’t be possible.
Beth L.: That women shouldn’t be trapped by pregnancy and our society is oriented in a way that punishes any pregnant woman for totally natural human biology.
Nathan A.: There can be a lot of grey area around what constitutes a danger to the life of the mother, and there needs to be legal clarity in these cases to prevent unnecessary deaths because of inaction.
Jessica L.: The mother’s life should be preserved over the baby’s. But in all honesty most of the time they can at least try to save both. I also support free contraception and prenatal care.
Kala G.: Everyone pushes adoption, but nobody wants to offer help with cleaning, cooking etc. I stood outside a clinic and they had 35 families “ready to adopt” but none ready to help with the hard stuff. Further proof that they only care about baby and not Mom.
Simone: We shouldn’t legislate this on mere religious grounds. Of course there are good secular reasons to be pro-life, as your account demonstrates
MattNyssan: 1. The Constitution is neither pro-life nor pro-choice 2. Abortion is a strong moral compromise 3. One’s faith should not determine how one settles this issue. 4. Provide better safety nets for pregnant women 5. Every child should be wanted.
Diana T.: Many women and even couples or families may be very financially, physically or emotionally challenged to buy an additional pregnancy/child.
Children with special needs are likely to make difficult, continuous, and long lasting challenges to their parents’ finances, time, energy, physical and mental well-being.
Almost all the world’s medical establishments and societies are not very helpful to parents in either of these above situations. Sometimes they actually work against the parents and the children in these situations.
I believe there is a huge social taboo against married couples with or without other children who might decide to give up a new baby for adoption.
Andrew Y.: That abortion shouldn’t be legal for non-medical reasons after viability. I’m still pro-choice though.
