Abortion worker pleads guilty in bomb scare

October 8, 2010/0 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Kelsey Hazzard

Back in September, Linda Meek was charged with “making false or misleading statements” regarding a suspicious item in a trash bin at the Reproductive Services abortion center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She has now plead guilty. Meek was the executive director of Reproductive Services, but for obvious reasons, she isn’t anymore.

At the time, the details were sketchy and abortion advocates came to her defense. For instance, at Jill Stanek’s blog, commenter Biggz pointed out that the center had been bombed twice in the 1990s; under those circumstances, he believed it would be reasonable for a 63-year-old to be nervous about a suspicious item on the premises.

And perhaps it would have been, if she hadn’t planted the suspicius item there herself:

Meek, who is no longer employed at the clinic, told the court on Thursday that she bought an egg timer at a department store on Aug. 13, set it so that it would start ticking and put it in her trash can. She then called the police and reported a bomb.

Reports at the time said Reproductive Services was evacuated after an employee supposedly noticed a box in a trash can that she reportedly did not recognize to be trash from the clinic.

Officials treated the threat seriously, and the clinic and a building next door were evacuated.

. . .

Meek has never given a reason for falsely reporting a bomb.

I think it’s fair to assume that she had some reason. If it wasn’t to make local pro-lifers look bad and increase public sympathy toward her abortion operation… what other reason could there possibly have been?
